DAY: 5 DAY 5: MACHU PICCHU TOUR - RETURN TO CUSCO

The day will start very early, we will go to the bus station, which is very close to all the hotels, Machu Picchu Pueblo is a fairly small, but cozy and therefore easy to walk.

At 5 am our day begins, we will have breakfast at our hotel and soak only what is necessary, and we will make the ascent by bus until we reach the checkpoint where we show our passport, your Machu Picchu ticket and your student ID, if applicable. We will arrive at approximately 6:00 am.

When we are all gathered we will enter Machu Picchu and begin our two and a half hour guided tour of the famous Inca site, where you will learn all about the Lost City of the Incas.

After receiving a briefing and orientation from our guides, we will have a free walk around Machu Picchu on your own.

The time you will spend in Machu Picchu will depend on how you will return to Cusco (train or private transport) and whether you want to climb Machu Picchu Mountain or Huayna Picchu Mountain, for which tickets must be booked in advance.

  • NOTE: If you have booked the additional ticket for HUAYNAPICCHU, you will need 2.5 hours to go up and down.
  • NOTE: If you have booked the extra entrance to MACHU PICCHU MONATAÑA you will need 3.5 hours to go up and down.

After our walk through Machu Picchu, and having recharged our energies in the mountain, we will be ready to return to Cusco.
Our 5 day Salkatany trek offers you to return to Cusco by train, an unparalleled experience that you will enjoy every moment.

The best way to return to Cusco allows you more time (about 7-8 hours) to visit Machu Picchu. If you are planning to hike Huaynapicchu or Machu Picchu mountain, the train is the best option over other ways that cost less, but do not have that magic that the train route offers.
You should return to Aguas Calientes in time to catch the train at 18:20. You may want to allow more time, as some people like to explore the town.

From the town of Aguas Calientes, you will travel by train for approximately 1.5 hours to Ollantaytambo, where you will change to a car and finish the last 2 hours of the trip, arriving in Cusco around 22:00.

If you are considering this option and plan to hike Huaynapicchu or Machu Picchu mountain, we recommend that you stay an extra night in Aguas Calientes and return to Cusco by car on the sixth day so that you can fully enjoy the experience.
